Terra Operating Environment
A purpose-built operating environment for the Terra suite.
A production system should not depend on the state of a general-purpose desktop. Unmanaged packages, background updates and configuration drift between machines all introduce variables that are difficult to control and impossible to reproduce. The Terra Operating Environment removes those variables by specifying the platform itself.
The environment consists of a minimal Linux base carrying only what the suite requires, a native shell developed in-house, and the Terra suite installed as system components. The result is a known, fully specified platform on which production deployments are reproducible.
Standalone operation preserved
The environment is optional by design. Every component we build also runs on a conventional Linux desktop; the operating environment provides a fully pinned and reproducible alternative for operators who require it, without making itself a prerequisite.
Status
The environment was established in mid-2026 and is in design and early implementation. Like the rest of the Terra programme it is private during development, and will be published through the Releases page when it reaches release quality.
